Install the Teams desktop plugin

  • Audience: App users

Last updated

Communicator in Teams relies on a small program on your computer, the desktop plugin, to carry the sound of your calls. Without it running, you can't place or answer calls from Teams.

Some labels in your portal or apps may look slightly different from this guide.

The Microsoft Teams integration features described on this page require an active, permitted connection to Microsoft Teams. Availability depends on that system's supported APIs and permissions.

Before you start

The plugin runs on Windows 10 or newer, or macOS 13.7 (Ventura) or newer. Add Communicator in Teams first, following Add Communicator in Teams and allow the microphone. Communicator in Teams is included on every plan. Ask CallSprout support to turn it on for your company.

Install the plugin

  1. Step 1:
    Open Communicator in Teams
Open the app in Teams and sign in.
  2. Step 2:
    Get the plugin
Select the desktop plugin download link in the app. If the plugin is already installed, select Open desktop plugin instead.
  3. Step 3:
    Install it
Download and install it on your computer. Once it's running, it connects to the Teams app by itself.

A plugin works with one Communicator in Teams sign-in at a time, so two people can't share it.

Use the tray menu

Right-click the plugin's icon in your system tray to open its menu:

  • Phone opens a dialpad.
  • Preferences holds Enable autorun, which starts the plugin with your computer. It's on unless you switch it off.
  • Notifications lists your recent call, voicemail and text alerts. Select one to jump to it in Teams.
  • About shows version details. Copy info copies them, which helps when you contact support.
  • Quit closes the plugin after a warning. Calls in Teams stop working until you start it again.

Keep it up to date

The plugin checks for updates and downloads them in the background. When one is ready, select Relaunch and install.

Change plugin settings

In Communicator in Teams, open More, then Preferences, then the Plugin tab. Your changes save automatically.

  • Show plugin on outgoing calls is off to start with, so the plugin stays minimized when you dial. Turn it on to bring the plugin forward.
  • Notify me when I receive a phone call is on to start with. On Windows, a notification shows who's calling, with Answer and Reject buttons.
  • Logout from plugin when Teams is closed is off to start with. Turn it on and closing Teams signs the plugin out, so calls stop reaching you there.
