Transfer a call (blind and attended)

  • Audience: End users

Last updated

There are two ways to hand a call to someone else. A blind transfer sends the caller over right away. An attended transfer lets you talk to your coworker first, so you can tell them who's calling before you connect them.

Key names differ from one desk phone model to the next. Where this guide says "Transfer key", look for the key or soft key on your phone that does that job.

Make a blind transfer

  1. Step 1:
    Start the transfer
Press your phone's Transfer key. Some phones have a separate blind transfer key; use that if you see one.
  2. Step 2:
Dial where the call should go
Enter the extension or phone number.
  3. Step 3:
    Finish the transfer
Complete the transfer the way your phone asks, usually by pressing Transfer again or hanging up. The caller starts ringing at the new number.

You can also dial # during the call, then the extension. If the code doesn't work, check with support.

Make an attended transfer

  1. Step 1:
Put the caller on hold for the transfer
Press your phone's Transfer key. Your caller hears hold music while you dial.
  2. Step 2:
    Call your coworker
Dial their extension or number and place the call.
  3. Step 3:
    Introduce the call
When they answer, tell them who's waiting and why.
  4. Step 4:
    Complete the transfer
Press Transfer again. The caller is connected to your coworker and you drop off the call.

You can also run an attended transfer by code. During the call, dial *2 followed by your coworker's extension and talk to them. When they're ready, hang up and the caller goes through. If the timing's wrong, either your coworker ends the call or you dial *0, and you're back with your caller. If these codes don't work, check with support.

Troubleshooting

  • A transfer code doesn't work. Code transfers may be off for your extension, or your system may use a different code. Use your phone's Transfer key, and check with support.
  • Your coworker sees your number instead of the customer's. Ask your admin to check the caller ID settings for transferred calls, or contact support.
