Block international or premium calls for a user

  • Audience: Admins

Last updated

Calling permissions limit where a user can call. A common use is blocking calls to other countries or to premium rate numbers from a lobby phone or a shared desk, so that phone only reaches the numbers it needs. CallSprout support sets calling permissions for you. This page explains what they do and what to send support.

What calling permissions do

Your account starts with rules about which kinds of numbers every user can call. Support can change those rules for one user, for a group of users, or for everyone.

Each kind of number, such as domestic, international or premium rate, gets one of three settings:

  • Allowed. Calls go through as normal.
  • PIN Required. The caller is asked for a PIN before the call connects. Support tells you which PIN applies, so you can pass it on to the people who need it.
  • Not allowed. Calls to that kind of number don't go through.

Calls inside your own system, such as to extensions and phone menus, can be limited the same way.

Ask support to change a user's permissions

  1. Step 1:
    Decide what should change

Note the user's name and extension, and which kinds of numbers they should or shouldn't reach. For example: block international and premium rate calls from the lobby phone, extension 1020.

  2. Step 2:
    Choose block or PIN

For each kind of number, say whether it should be allowed, need a PIN or not be allowed.

  3. Step 3:
    Send it to support

Contact CallSprout support with those details. If several users share a setup, list them all in one request.

  4. Step 4:
    Check an everyday call

When support confirms the change, make a normal call from that phone to check it still works. If you want to check the block itself, ask support how.

Good to know

  • Describe what you want in plain words, like "no international calls". Blocking the wrong kind of number can stop everyday calls, so let support match it to the right setting.
  • Calling permissions only cover calls a user places. To stop calls coming in from a number, see block a caller or anonymous calls.
  • On some accounts, users can see the kinds of numbers their extension may call on a Destinations page in their user portal.

Troubleshooting

  • A user can't call another country, or a certain kind of number. Their calling permissions may block it. Work through why can't I dial a number or country?, then ask support to check.
  • A call still goes through after a block. Contact support with the extension, the number dialed and the date and time of the call.
