Ring time, call waiting and simultaneous calls

  • Audience: Admins

Last updated

Three settings on each user control what happens when calls pile up: how long the phone rings, whether a second caller can get through while the user is on a call, and how many calls the user can have going at once. All three are in the user's advanced settings.

Some labels in your portal or apps may look slightly different from this guide.

Change how long the phone rings

A call that rings for the full ring time counts as unanswered and moves on, usually to voicemail. Unless someone changed it, a user's phone rings for about half a minute.

  1. Step 1:
    Open the user

Go to Extensions, find the user and select the edit icon.

  2. Step 2:
    Show the advanced settings

Select Show advanced options and scroll to the call properties.

  3. Step 3:
    Set the ring time

Enter the number of seconds in Ringtime (sec). A lower number sends callers to voicemail sooner. A higher one gives the user longer to reach the phone.

  4. Step 4:
    Save

    Select Save.

If the user forwards calls to another number, the forwarding has its own timing. See forward your calls.

Turn off call waiting

With call waiting on, a second caller still rings through during a conversation. Some people would rather send that caller straight to voicemail.

  1. Step 1:
    Open the call control settings

In the user's advanced settings, scroll to the call control section.

  2. Step 2:
Set the busy level to 1

    Enter 1 in Busy level.

  3. Step 3:
    Apply it to incoming calls

Turn on Apply Busy Level for Incoming Calls.

  4. Step 4:
    Choose where busy calls go

Use the busy destination fields to send the second caller to the user's voicemail or somewhere else. Then save.

Busy level on its own only changes how the user shows to coworkers with a busy lamp key for them. It's the second setting that turns call waiting off.

Limit simultaneous calls

Incoming Limit and Outgoing Limit cap how many calls the user can have at the same time in each direction.

  • Incoming Limit. Once the user has this many incoming calls, the next caller goes to voicemail or hears a busy signal. A limit of 1 means nobody else gets through while the user is talking, so it also works as a way to stop call waiting.
  • Outgoing Limit. Caps how many calls the user can place at once. Putting a call on hold and dialing another number counts as a second call.

You can also have the system play a sound or send an email when a user goes over a limit. Look for those options in the same section.
