Forward your calls (and which method to use)
- Audience: End users
Last updated
Call forwarding sends your calls somewhere else, such as a coworker's extension or your cell phone. You can turn it on quickly with a star code, or set up more detailed rules in your user portal.
Some labels in your portal or apps may look slightly different from this guide.
Pick a method
| Method | Best for | What it can do |
|---|---|---|
| Star code from your desk phone | Quick changes, like leaving the office for the afternoon | Sends your calls to one number until you turn it off. |
| Your user portal | Rules you set once and leave in place | Different destinations for busy, no answer and offline, separate rules for internal and outside callers, and callers who always ring through. |
| Your Communicator status, set up in your user portal | Forwarding that follows your status, if you use the Communicator apps | Different destinations when you're busy, away or on Do Not Disturb in the app. |
Forward all calls with a star code
- Step 1:Dial the forwarding code and the numberDial *71, then the extension or phone number where you want your calls to go.
- Step 2:Add a ring time if you want oneTo let your own phone ring for a while first, add the star key and the number of seconds after the destination number. If you leave it off, your phone likely rings for about 30 seconds first. If it works differently for you, check with support.
- Step 3:Turn forwarding off when you're backDial *72.
Set forwarding rules in your user portal
- Step 1:Open your call forwarding settingsSign in to your user portal, select Other, then Services, and select Edit next to Call Forwarding.
- Step 2:Choose when forwarding appliesSet a destination for each case you need: all calls, when you're busy, when you don't answer, or when your phone is offline. You can set outside callers and internal callers separately.
- Step 3:Add more than one destination if you likeEach case can have several destinations, each with its own ring time.
- Step 4:Save your changes
You can also add an exclude list of callers whose calls always ring your phone, even when forwarding is on. For a tour of the rest of your call settings, see Manage forwarding, follow me and caller ID online. In Communicator GO, you can set forwarding from the GO dashboard.
What to expect
- Your phone's own forward key may not work. Use a star code or your user portal instead, or contact support.
- If a forwarded call isn't answered anywhere, it ends up in your voicemail.
Troubleshooting
- You don't see call forwarding in your user portal. Forwarding is on for every user, but the portal setting may be hidden for you. Use the star code, or ask your admin, who can ask CallSprout support to show it.
