How 911 works on your CallSprout phones and apps

  • Audience: End users

Last updated

Dial 911 from your desk phone or Communicator. Your desk phone and the Communicator apps send the address registered to the phone number on your extension. CallSprout support sets that address. If none is registered, none is sent.

In an emergency

  1. Step 1:
    Dial 911
Dial 911 directly. Don't dial 9 or any other code first.
  2. Step 2:
Tell the dispatcher where you are
Give your address, floor and room, even if you think they already have it.
  3. Step 3:
    Stay on the line
Don't hang up until the dispatcher says you can.

Where your location comes from

E911 service is required for every CallSprout account. Each phone number has one registered emergency address, and CallSprout support sets it.

  • Desk phone. It sends the address registered to the phone number on your extension. The phone can't tell when it's been moved.
  • Communicator on a computer. CallSprout Communicator NEXT and Communicator for the web send the same registered address. They don't ask where you are. See how 911 finds you when you call from the apps.
  • Communicator GO on your cell phone. A 911 call from GO goes out through your phone's own dialer and mobile network, so your mobile carrier handles it the way it handles any cell phone 911 call.

Working from home or on the road

The registered address doesn't change when you do. If a phone moves or you start working from a new place, tell your admin before you take calls there. Your admin asks CallSprout support to update the emergency address.

Emergency addresses work only on US accounts. If you work outside the US, contact support before you count on your phone or the apps for 911.

Good to know

  • 911 calls need power and an internet connection where you are. Keep another way to call for help, like a cell phone, in case of an outage.
  • Consider a battery backup for your office router and phones, so they stay up a while longer if the power goes out. Even then, a long outage can stop 911 calls from your desk phone or computer.
  • Never dial 911 to test your phone. To check your address, ask your admin, who can have CallSprout support confirm what's on file.
  • If your address looks wrong or is missing, tell your admin.
